OPERATION BILL TILMAN
Sailing Adventures for Young Adults
             

WHAT IS IT?    Fun and challenging sailing voyages for young adults (18-24) who are eager to experience life to the fullest and participate in a high adventure, wilderness sailing expedition. 

BILL TILMAN was one of the most intrepid sailors and mountaineers of all time. After fighting in both World Wars and climbing extensively in the Himalayas, he spent the last 25 years of his life leading sailing expeditions with young adults to the far southern waters of Cape Horn and the far northern waters of Greenland and Baffin Bay, often leading first ascents in the mountains of these regions in the process. This trip is in the spirit of Tilman’s no-nonsense, authentic approach to adventure and exploration.

REQUIREMENTS: NO SAILING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED, however, a willingness to try all aspects of voyaging under sail and an eagerness to participate in a great adventure are essential. This includes navigating and standing night watches, steering, sail changes, cooking and cleaning aboard, boat maintenance and anchoring, and living in close quarters with others. There will also be plenty of time for hiking and kayaking among the islands we visit.

What's the purpose?  The high cost of education, the lack of meaningful entry-level jobs with a living wage, the addictive pull of electronic media, competing moral and political ethics, and the need to separate from one’s parents can be overwhelming and bewildering.  It is critical for young people to have the chance to explore their own capacities, center their minds, test limits with a safety net, and share  of themselves in a safe and healthy sphere.  Not to mention having a heck of a lot of fun while doing it.
